Continuing Strong play – Overbet for Value discussion

Last nights session got me thinking about a little used play called Overbetting the pot for value.  This is an advanced technique that can only be used against certain opponents where you can set them up for it and make it look like your play is a total bluf even though your holding the best hand.  I employed this technique perfectly last night to save a session and want to discuss a little bit of how the flow of the match was happening and how I set the play up.

I was playing this guy fishdoc7 who was your classic big time calling station when I was showing agression but then the second I let up on any street he would fire a big pot sized bet.  You would think this would be easy to beat and normally it would but I haven’t been running equally agianst my opponents lately and it’s tough to wade through the match when every other hand he has 2 pair, flushes, straights etc.  So I called down a couple of these big bets in the beginning of the match with good hands he just always had slightly better.  I knew if he didn’t leave though that I would be able to stack him.  Fishdoc7 was up about 200 when this hand happened I have Ah 8h and raised to 18 pre he called. Flop comes 8x 6h 2x.  I bet 30 he makes it 90 and i instantly made it 350 and he instacalled.  The turn comes a 10h and i push for 350 he calls showing 10 8!!! and I can’t hit my Ace or heart for the pot.  So this hand had his stack up to 1500 and i had to rebuy to 600.  Two hands later I have 8 3 in the bb and just check.  The flop comes 8 8 2.  I am first to act and bet 20..wanted to make it look like I was pissed and he called.  Now there is 50 in the pot and the turn was a 10.  I bet 77 and he called.  Now there is 200 in the pot and the river was a Q and i showed 450 and he instacalled with 77!!.  Now this was the match changer right here.  If I had stuck to pot sized bets the whole way my  river bet would have just been 70 bucks and instead of winning 600 from him I would have only won 100.  This technique of overbetting for value is when you know your opponent is not playin anything but his own cards in situation to the hand.  He won’t think well maybe this guy has three 8’s because he doesn’t understand these tecniques or the flow of the match.  This can’t be used against good/advanced players to this degree but it’s very effective if you to stack the beginners.  I hope this was informatinal for all. Please let me know if there are any techniques that anyone would like discussed or if anyone has any questions.  I ended up stacking  him later on in in the match when he got frusterated and we got it all in pre with AK for me vs his Q 10 and I held.
